Dental Crowns in Portland, ME

Dental crowns are personalized "caps," placed over weakened, compromised teeth to preserve and restore them to their optimum shape and strength. It is a special type of covering that fits over the entire part of a tooth visible above the gum, strengthening the tooth as it functions like a natural tooth.
Portland Center for Dentistry offers crown restorations to repair decayed, broken, or severely worn teeth. Crowns can also serve as a protective cover for a tooth after a root canal or to cover an implant.
Advantages of Dental Crowns
Dental crowns offer many advantages for both oral health and smile function. They can:
- Repair damaged teeth – Crowns solve the problem of worn down teeth, chipped teeth, or fix a decayed tooth, while preserving a natural tooth.
- Stabilize chewing – A crown improves biting and chewing ability and protects a tooth from further wear and damage.
- Improve appearance – Crowns are also sculpted and colored to match your teeth and can hide ugly spots or crooked teeth to get a beautiful smile.
- Supports bridges and implants – A crown may support a dental bridge to cover a space created by a missing tooth; the bridge needs a strong tooth that will be used as a 'post' for the crowns actually covering the gap.
- Preserves after root canal – After root canal therapy, the machine covers and reinforces the treated tooth to protect it from cracking.
The Crown Procedure
Having a crown at Portland Center for Dentistry usually takes two visits to our clinic. On the first visit, the tooth is prepared: decay is eliminated, and the tooth is shaped to accept the crown. A digital impression is made of the prepared tooth and its neighbors, and a temporary crown is put on to protect the tooth. The digital impression is then used to create a highly accurate, custom crown in a dental laboratory (or through our in-office milling unit).
We remove the temporary crown during the second visit and fit it with the permanent one. The new crown is carefully checked for fit, color, and bite. Finally, it is bonded into place with strong dental cement. Once cemented, the crown functions like a natural tooth. With proper care, well-made crowns typically last many years; studies show they usually last 5–15 years with good oral hygiene.
Advanced Technology
Portland Center for Dentistry utilizes advanced digital technology to improve precision and efficiency. Instead of traditional putty, we use an intraoral scanner to create a precise 3D map of your teeth. Our office is equipped with CAD/CAM milling, allowing us to create same-day crowns from zirconia or porcelain. We also use computerized X-rays for detailed imaging, ensuring a perfect fit and a healthy tooth underneath. This technology reduces pain, shortens treatment time, and maintains high quality.
